Trinity School to Stage a Production of ‘You Can’t Take it With You’

Trinity School at River Ridge seniors will be performing the Kaufmann and Hart play, You Cant Take it With you at 7:30 p.m on May 20 and 21.

The play, which looks at social class and family relationships, was first performed in 1936 and won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1937.
#13;
You Cant Take it With You revolves around the love story between Alice Sycamore, who lives with her eccentric family and quirky various hangers-on, and Tony Kirby, who comes from a wealthy Wall Street family.
#13;
Drama teacher, Debby Salmon, likens the tension in the play to movies such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, in which one family is delightfully eccentric and the other is delightfully uptight.
#13;
Jonathan Gaworski plays Paul Sycamore, Alices father, who whiles away his time making fireworks in the basement.
#13;
Gaworski is enjoying playing this father of a ragtag family because the Paul Sycamore character is a quiet sort and Gawarski is not. Its challenging for me to be quiet, he said.
#13;
Also challenging for Gawarski is rehearsing for two plays at the same time. He will perform in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe for The Open Window Theater the following weekend.
#13;
The part of the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina is being performed by Mary Reeher. Reeher said it is interesting to play this woman who went from being a grand duchess to being a waitress while maintaining a positive attitude.
#13;
Reeher, who is interested in Russian history, had an especially good time speculating on her characters backstory.

For Trinity School juniors and seniors, drama is an integral part of the curriculum. During one semester in each their final two years at the school, students attend a daily, two-hour drama class that culminates in a staged production.
#13;
Since half the students in each grade take drama first semester and the other half second second semester, the school mounts four performances each year. Students learn about acting and the interpretation of plays and they participate in all aspects of play production including set design and construction, costumes, and mareketing.
#13;
Our goal is to help them understand how the theater can be an expression of society, said Salmon, who has taught drama at the school for a decade.
#13;
Salmon helps students understand that theater is more than acting; the real goal is to move the audience. Theater can bring to life a good story and touches on the successes, joys, and difficulties all people face.
#13;
For Gaworski, the best thing about drama class has been the bonding experience. He explained that its more informal than a classroom and spending two hours each day with his classmates has forged relationships in a way the doesnt happen in a traditional classroom setting.
