Responding to complaints of speeding and reckless driving by
commercial vehicles along Kentucky 8, Commercial Vehicle
Enforcement, a division of the Kentucky State Police conducted
random stops on trucks travelling the highway Friday.
The targeted enforcement of the was possible through the Motor
Carrier Safety Assistance Program. The program is federally funded
and, according to the US Department of Transportations Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration website, the program is to
provide financial assistance to states in an effort to reduce the
number and severity of crashes and hazardous materials incidents
involving commercial vehicles.
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Larry Farris said because
the commercial trucks operate under federal safety regulations, no
reason is needed to stop the trucks for safety inspections.
Five officers were on Kentucky 8 Friday four a period of about
four hours and stopped 13 trucks, Farris said, resulting in 13
federal safety violations. Some of the trucks had no violations,
while others had multiple.
Farris said of the 13 trucks, two were placed out of service
because of certain safety violations.
Additionally, nine weights were checked and two citations were
issued.
Farris said the extra presence in the area provides saturation
control. Truck drivers learn of the presence of officers in the
area and are more careful in their operation of the vehicles.
Farris said Kentucky 8 is especially affected by commercial
vehicles because of construction work at the East Kentucky Power
site. However, he stressed that most truck drivers are hardworking
people and the targeted enforcement is not to be perceived as
picking on them.
Truck drivers are honest, hardworking people … but were here
in response to community complaints about possible speeding or
reckless driving, Farris said.
Farris said he hoped the aggressive presence along Kentucky 8
will help to improve the safety of those travelling in the
area.
