Will City’s Delawanna post office shut down?

Posted By on August 12, 2011

One of the targeted sites is at 266 Main Ave., in the City’s Delawanna section, according to Postal Service information.

We have not announced any closings, we only announced that a study will take place, said George Flood, spokesman for the Postal Service’s Northeast region.

No decision has been made yet, it’s way too early, Flood said, adding the study will take several months and lots of criteria will be considered when making a final decision.

Flood said the study will look at the site’s foot traffic, access to other post offices in the area, how the closing affects the community and the postal employees.

The study, Flood said, may take several months. He said as part of the study, public input will be solicited through posters, information posted in the post office, releases to local newspapers and by individuals who will visit the Main Avenue post office.

We will have surveyors in the lobby of all sites we are considering closing, Flood said.

Out of the 32,000 post offices nationwide, 3,700 are being studied for possible closing, 50 of them in New Jersey, Flood said.

Clifton’s other post offices are located at 1114 Main Ave., 495 Allwood Road and 1360 Clifton Ave.

There is a package and passport center on Paulison Avenue, but it is not open to regular mail business.

The US Postal Service is attempting to cut back on expenses by shutting down some of its locations. According to Postal Service information, Our customer’s habits have made it clear they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business…More and more of them are choosing to conduct their postal business online, on their smart phone and at their shopping destinations. And that means the need for us to maintain nearly 32,000 retail offices has diminished.

The Postal Service is also set to introduce a new concept, Village Post Offices, which would be operated by local businesses such as pharmacies, grocery stores, etc. Since more and more people are conducting business electronically, the Postal Service has seen a drop in revenue and since it receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations, it is looking at ways to reduce expenses, according to Postal Service releases. The agency, according to reports, lost $8 billion last year.
