Vacationing NYPD detective critically wounded in Miami shootout

A vacationing NYPD detective was critically wounded in a gunfight in Miami Beach early Saturday morning.

Miami Beach police said the veteran first-grade detective encountered a man or group of men at 7 am on an outside corridor of his hotel, and wound up trading shots before he was hit.

Detective Harold Thomas, a 27-year-veteran assigned to the NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he went into surgery twice yesterday and was scheduled for surgery again today.
