Activities planned for National Hunting and Fishing Day

The Missouri Department of Conservation will observe National Hunting and Fishing Day in the Kansas City area on Saturday, Sept. 24, by offering activities that help introduce people to the outdoors.
The James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area near Lees Summit will host demonstrations and hands-on instruction for youths from 10 am to 2 pm Activities will include target archery, shotgun trap shooting, pellet rifle target shooting, a youth fishing program, trapping demonstrations and vendors from the outdoor field. Private, non-profit conservation and youth organizations will have display booths.
All activities are free and the general public is welcome. Many instructional programs are designed for youths ages 9 to 16. But everyone is welcome to attend and browse.
Attendees will enter through the gate at the new MDC Kansas City Regional Office, 12405 SE Ranson Road. However the Hunting and Fishing Day activities will be based at the old Reed Area headquarters building.
Also on Saturday, a free shooting hour and a chance to try out a variety of firearms will be offered from 10 am to 4 pm at the Parma Woods Shooting Range, 15900 NW River Road, near Parkville. Attendees will be able to shoot during the first hour of their visit for free at the rifle and pistol target range. Also, Parma Woods staff will have a booth with various guns used in educational programs on display, including antique-style flintlock and percussion-cap rifles. Participants will have a chance to fire those guns on the target range.
