BHS homecoming activities won’t include downtown parade

Baldwin High School will be celebrating its homecoming Friday, but it wont be having its annual afternoon parade that started a few years ago.
BHS officials and student council voted to discontinue the parade, which featured a float from each of the four classes and the six candidates riding in convertibles. Ending the parade was a decision made by the BHS student council and school officials agreed it was headed in the wrong direction.
“It was always a scramble to do the parade on the same day,” said Natalie Schmidt-Konkel, BHS counselor and student council sponsor. “We always scrambled to get the floats ready. Its just progressively gotten to this point.
“The student council decided that about a month ago,” she said. “We talked about the pros and cons of doing the floats and they decided not to do floats. We told them we cant really do a parade without floats. So then it was decided that we will do more with the football bus. We even thought about doing a march from the school to the stadium. But we had a lot of safety concerns crossing the highway, so that didnt fly. We figured this was the next best thing.”
Instead of the parade through downtown Baldwin City, BHS students will be having a pep rally at Baker Universitys Liston Stadium before the game Friday. The pep rally will be at 5:45 pm and the BHS football team will arrive at the stadium for the pep rally. The BHS football bus will also be decorated for the teams short drive to the stadium.
“Were having a short pep rally in lieu of our parade,” Schmidt said. “Were planning on incorporating the candidates so they get their moment to shine since we arent doing the parade.”
Another addition in lieu of the parade will be decorating lockers. The BHS classes will be decorating the lockers with “Bulldog Pride” as the theme.
The Baldwin High student body chose its homecoming candidates Monday. The three queen candidates are Lakyn Clark, Kaysha Green and Brooke Morgan, while the trio of king candidates are Asher Hannon, Jake Mindez and Brian Wright.
The coronation ceremony will be at halftime of the BHS football game. The contest against El Dorado begins at 7 pm and halftime should be around 8 pm
“Im looking forward to Friday,” Green said. “I think the football team is pumped, too. It will be different with no parade, but it will be fun.”
Baldwin High students have been celebrating homecoming all week with daily dress-up themes and activities. The themes were pajama day (Monday), superhero day (Tuesday), decade day (Wednesday), toga day (Thursday) and purple pride day (Friday).
On Monday night, the student body was invited back to BHS for movie night. They watched “Remember the Titans” in the cafeteria. There was an all-school assembly to meet the homecoming candidates on Wednesday.
“Its been awesome,” Green said. “My partner Jake and I have been coordinating our costumes. I also like our themes this year.”
