Thanksgiving Family Forum: GOP Candidates on Social Issues

I hate that I missed this live, but I didnt even hear about it until after it was over.
Thats, unfortunately, the priority our mainstream media and pop culture places on the foundation of all that we know and are blessed by in America. Some desperately want Americans to believe that public morality and social issues are unimportant, and that a candidates morality and character are irrelevant.
Im talking about the Thanksgiving Family Forum, a discussion of what is known in modern culture as social issues by the GOP presidential candidates. It was held yesterday at the First Federated Church, Des Moines, Iowa. It was moderated by Frank Luntz.
Yet nothing (the contention I mentioned in the second paragraph) could be further from the truth. That is why our first president, George Washington, told us in his farewell address
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicityAnd let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
One of the chief crafters of the Declaration of Independence and our second president, John Adams, agreed wholeheartedly about the importance of maintaining a strong moral fiber in our society and in our societys leaders:
We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
So it is no wonder that Americas first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, John Jay, would say
Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.
Fortunately, video of the event is available here at CitizenLink, as well as on YouTube as you see in the video below.
Candidates present were Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum.
Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman were invited but declined to attend. Which is probably just as well, since both leave much to be desired on social issues and could only do more damage to their candidacies by exposing it in an environment like this.
Whether you cherish innocent human life, the family, and public morality or not, I encourage you to watch the entire video. You may just be surprised by some of the answers and some of the things that come out. There is incredibly personal candor at times from some of the candidates. You will probably see many of them as real people, in a way that you have never and probably could never see them in a conventional debate setting.
As George Washington made clear, while the elites in the mainstream media and elsewhere on the Left pooh-pooh these issues, there are no more important issues in the public square than these. All of the liberties we enjoy in America, all the safety we enjoy, and all the prosperity we enjoy, we owe to our first and primary recognition of God as the author of all liberty and blessing. And we cannot say that we are continuing in the same vein as our founders if we treat Gods standards with disdain or contempt.
We are beginning to realize that we are paying a price across society for disregarding these standards, and that cost is high indeed. Its time we returned to our roots, and repaired the foundations of our great nation, before it completely crumbles into ruin.
